Wujin admitted as the first ¡°Living Practice City¡± in China for the World Urban Campaign (UNHABITAT)

Nairobi, 7 Jul 10

Since the launch of ¡°The 100 Cities Initiative for Sustainable Urbanisation¡±, the number of cities worldwide has exceeded 10 till July 5, 2010. The 11th city is ¡°Wujin, China¡±, which is also the first Chinese city to join in the ¡°The 100 Cities Initiative for Sustainable Urbanisation¡±. Prior to this, there were 10 cities including Chicago and Philadelphia of the USA, Vienna of Austria, Alicante of Spain, Pushchino of Russia, Description: iw_closeSão João da Barra of Brazil, Makati of the Philippines, Description: iw_closeMedell¨ªn of Colombia, Rabat of Morocco, and Mumbai of India.
The three initiatives that Wujin submitted were all very relevant to the Paris Principles of the World Urban Campaign.

The initiative - "Help migrant workers, and plan a harmonious future" has provided affordable housing with a decent and dignified living environment for nearly 50,000 migrant workers in the past 10 years. The initiative involves the building of affordable but socially inclusive and sound apartments in close proximity of where the workers¡¯ jobs are located. The initiative itself created 1,000 new job opportunities while providing a stabilizing force for exiting migrant workers through improved housing, recreational facilities, access to basic services including welfare services. Perhaps most importantly, the initiative provides the families of migrant workers with a dignified existence through the integration of their children in the local educational system. Another initiative - "Balance Urban and Rural Development, and Build a Happy New Countryside" was started in 2006. By early 2010, in just four years, newgreen areas in  Wujin¡¯s surrounding hinterland increased by 16.7 km2, 311 new roads totaling 960,000m2 have been built, 82 new and easily accessible recreational spaces have been built among 76 villages, and 37 new village-level public service centers have been built. Hundreds of companies invested a total of nearly US$ 50 million in a comprehensive public-private-community partnership in this first step towards creating a new rural-urban continuum and renewed local economic development.

Another ongoing initiative is "The co-development of low-carbon construction and economy¡±.  Despite the fact the economic out in Wujin has doubled in the last three years, carbon emissions were reduced by by 57%. In 2009, days of good air quality in Wujin accounted for more than 90%; CO2 emission intensity was reduced from 5.14 kg in 2005 to 2.30 kg, with a decrease of 55%, and SO2 emission intensity was reduced from 6.82 kg in 2005 to 2.88 kg.

Wujin is very honoured be  to be the first Chinese city  to qualify as a ¡°Living Practice City¡± and to join the ranks of the 100 Cities Initiative of the World Urban Campaign.

Both the Campaign and UN-Habitat specially commend the City of Wujin for its pioneering work in the social inclusion of migrant workers and its continuing efforts in striving for harmonious urbanization. The City will make every effort to provide updates regarding its ongoing initiatives and efforts in sustainable urbanisation and is fully committed to sharing lessons learned with other cities around the world.
